The best coffee subscription in the UK is the one that delivers freshly roasted, genuinely high-quality coffee with the flexibility to skip, swap or cancel whenever you need. Judge any subscription on four things: roast freshness, coffee quality, flexibility and the true cost per cup. Everything else is packaging.
Subscription coffee has grown quickly in the UK, and the choice is now huge: big-name roasters, craft micro-lots, letterbox pouches and full kilo bags on repeat. The hard part is not finding a subscription. It is knowing which one actually delivers on its promise of fresh, great coffee rather than convenience for its own sake. We run a coffee subscription ourselves, and we will be upfront about that, but the criteria below apply to every subscription on the market, ours included.
How to judge a coffee subscription
Before you compare specific brands, understand what actually separates a great subscription from a mediocre one. These are the four things worth checking, whichever roaster you choose.
Roast freshness: roast date, not best-before
Freshness is the single most important factor and the one most easily hidden. Supermarket coffee often carries a best-before date 12 to 18 months out, by which point the aromatic compounds that make speciality coffee taste alive have long faded. A good subscription roasts in small batches and dispatches quickly, so your coffee arrives days old rather than months old. Look for a roast date on the bag, not a best-before date.
Coffee quality: speciality grade, and traceable
Not all subscription coffee is equal. The Speciality Coffee Association scores coffee on a 100-point scale, and anything scoring 80 or above qualifies as speciality grade. If you are paying a premium for a subscription, you should be getting speciality-grade beans rather than commercial coffee in nicer packaging. Traceability is the other tell: a genuine speciality roaster can tell you the origin, region and often the farm, not just the country. If you are weighing up variety against consistency, our guide to single origin versus blends is a good place to start.
Flexibility: can you actually pause and cancel?
Some subscriptions are easy to join and quietly hard to leave. Before you commit, check that you can skip a delivery when life gets in the way, swap your coffee between deliveries as your taste changes, adjust how often it arrives, and cancel online without a phone call or a deliberately awkward process. Flexibility is what turns a subscription from a commitment into a convenience.
Price per cup, not price per bag
Monthly cost on its own is misleading. A cheaper bag can cost more per cup once you account for size and delivery. To compare fairly, work out the cost per cup: take the price plus any delivery charge and divide by the number of cups in the bag. A 250g bag makes roughly 15 to 18 cups; a 1kg bag makes around 60. Watch for low headline prices propped up by a delivery charge, and favour subscriptions where the discount and delivery terms are clear.
What we offer
Our own subscription is built to meet all four criteria above. It is speciality coffee, small-batch roasted in Glasgow, delivered on your schedule with genuine flexibility and a discount that rewards longer plans.
| Subscriber discount | 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% off every order on the 1, 3, 6 and 12-month plans |
| Delivery | Free UK delivery on subscription orders over £15 |
| Flexibility | Pause, skip, swap or cancel anytime, with no contract |

The longer your plan, the more you save: 10% on the monthly plan, rising through 15% and 20% to 25% on the 12-month plan, with the discount coming off every order rather than a one-off welcome offer. Free UK delivery applies to subscription orders over £15, and you can pause, skip, swap or cancel from your account at any time. If you are not sure where to begin, our plain-English coffee guide and our guide to roast levels will help you narrow it down before you subscribe.
Is a coffee subscription worth it?
If you drink coffee most days and care about how it tastes, a subscription is almost always worth it. You get coffee that is roasted in small batches and delivered fresh rather than sitting on a shelf, you never run out, and the subscriber discount and free delivery over £15 mean the per-cup cost is usually lower than buying the same speciality coffee as one-off bags. If you drink a cup a week and are happy with what the supermarket offers, the honest answer is that you probably do not need one. We look at this trade-off in more detail in is a coffee subscription worth it?
Subscription versus the supermarket
The everyday comparison is a subscription against a premium supermarket brand. On freshness there is no contest: supermarket coffee is built around a long best-before window, while subscription coffee is roasted to a schedule and arrives days old. On cost, supermarket premium brands look cheaper per bag, but you are comparing commodity or entry-level coffee against independently scored speciality grade, which is closer to the difference between an everyday bottle of wine and one you would choose to savour. On variety, a subscription opens up seasonal lots and origins that rarely reach retail shelves. If you value freshness and quality, a good subscription pays for itself quickly, both in the cup and in never running out.
How our subscription works
Setting it up takes a couple of minutes:
- Choose your coffee. Browse the range or take our quiz to get matched to your brew method and flavour preferences.
- Pick your grind. Whole bean, cafetiere, filter or espresso. If you have a grinder, whole bean stays fresh longest.
- Choose your frequency. Every 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks. Start with every 2 weeks if you drink two or more cups a day.
- Manage it yourself. Pause, skip, swap your coffee, change your grind or cancel from your account. It is all self-serve, with no emails or phone calls required.
Coffee subscription FAQ
Is a coffee subscription worth it?
Yes, if you drink coffee regularly and care about quality. You get freshly roasted speciality coffee delivered on your schedule, a subscriber discount on every order, and free UK delivery over £15, which usually makes the per-cup cost lower than buying the same coffee as one-off bags. It is less worthwhile if you only drink the occasional cup or are happy with a standard supermarket brand.
Can I pause or skip a coffee subscription?
Yes. With our subscription you can pause, skip, swap your coffee or cancel at any time from your account, with no contract and no penalty. Changes take effect from your next scheduled delivery, so you can flex it around holidays, a full cupboard or a quiet month.
How much does a coffee subscription cost in the UK?
It depends on the roaster, the bag size and how many cups you get per bag, so the fairest measure is cost per cup rather than the headline monthly price. With our subscription the discount is 10%, 15%, 20% or 25% off every order depending on whether you choose the 1, 3, 6 or 12-month plan, and UK delivery is free on subscription orders over £15, which keeps the per-cup cost of speciality-grade coffee competitive with premium supermarket bags.
How much coffee do I need per month?
As a rough guide, a 250g bag makes about 15 to 18 cups and a 1kg bag around 60. One cup a day is roughly 250g to 500g a month; two cups a day is closer to 1kg a month. If you are not sure, start with a smaller bag every 2 weeks and adjust the frequency once you see how quickly you get through it.
