Best Espresso Beans UK . What to Look For

The best espresso beans combine a medium-to-dark roast level, freshness within four weeks of roasting, and a blend that balances body, sweetness and crema. In the UK, the speciality coffee scene has made genuinely excellent espresso beans more accessible than ever , but the sheer volume of options makes choosing harder. This guide explains what to look for and introduces three espresso coffees we roast in Glasgow that consistently deliver outstanding results.

What Makes a Great Espresso Bean?

Espresso is a demanding brew method. Water is forced through finely-ground coffee at roughly 9 bars of pressure in 25-30 seconds. That short contact time means the bean must be roasted and ground to exacting standards , there is no room for error and no steeping time to compensate for imbalance.

The qualities that distinguish the best espresso beans:

  • Roast level: Medium to dark. Lighter roasts can produce sour, under-developed shots. Espresso benefits from the caramelised sugars and reduced acidity that come with more development.
  • Freshness: Ideally 7-28 days post-roast. Too fresh (under 5 days) and CO2 produces an unstable extraction. Too old and the oils oxidise, losing sweetness and crema.
  • Crema potential: Robusta blends or fresh arabica with good oil content produce thick, stable crema. This is not just aesthetic , crema carries aromatic compounds that define the espresso experience.
  • Grind consistency: Espresso requires a very fine, uniform grind. Whole bean purchases and a quality burr grinder give you control over this critical variable.

Our Top Espresso Beans

1. Espresso Blend

Our signature espresso , a carefully balanced arabica and robusta blend designed specifically for espresso machines. The robusta component adds body and crema, while the arabica delivers sweetness and complexity. Roasted in Glasgow, SCA-scored, and one of our best-selling coffees for good reason. If you are buying espresso beans for the first time, start here.

2. Dolce Vita (Italian Roast)

A dark roast blend with deep, bold flavour , chocolate, nuts, and a long, smooth finish. Dolce Vita is for those who prefer their espresso rich and intense. It pulls exceptionally well as a double shot and stands up to milk in flat whites and lattes without losing character.

3. Blazing Trails

Our strongest, boldest dark roast. Blazing Trails is not subtle , it delivers maximum intensity with a full body that works brilliantly as espresso. If you like your coffee to make a statement, this is the one. It is also excellent for cold brew concentrate and moka pot brewing.

Single Origin vs Blend for Espresso

Most traditional espresso is made with blends, and for good reason , blends allow roasters to balance acidity, body and sweetness in ways that a single origin cannot. However, single origin espresso has become increasingly popular in speciality coffee. Light-roasted Ethiopian or Kenyan beans can produce vibrant, fruity espresso shots that are a world away from the traditional Italian style.

Our recommendation: if you are new to espresso, start with a blend. Our espresso coffee range includes blends designed for balanced, forgiving extraction. Once you are comfortable with your machine and grinder, experiment with single origins for variety.

Grind Size for Espresso

Espresso requires a very fine grind , much finer than cafetiere or filter. The grind should feel like fine sand between your fingers. If your shot runs too fast (under 20 seconds), grind finer. If it runs too slow (over 35 seconds) or chokes the machine, grind coarser.

We offer espresso grind on all our coffees, but for the best results, buy whole bean and grind fresh before each shot. The difference in flavour is substantial , pre-ground coffee begins losing volatile aromatics within minutes of grinding.

How to Store Espresso Beans

Keep your beans in an airtight container at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze , the moisture and temperature fluctuations damage the oils and compromise flavour. Buy in quantities you will use within 2-4 weeks. Our 227g bags are ideal for regular home espresso use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best espresso beans in the UK?

The best espresso beans balance body, sweetness and crema. Look for medium-to-dark roasts from speciality roasters who score their beans to SCA standards. At We Are Coffee Co, our Espresso Blend, Dolce Vita Italian Roast and Blazing Trails are all designed specifically for espresso extraction.

Should I use single origin or blend for espresso?

Blends are more forgiving and produce a balanced, consistent shot. Single origins can deliver more distinctive flavour but require more precise dialling in. Start with a blend if you are new to espresso.

How fine should espresso beans be ground?

Espresso grind should be very fine , like fine sand. A 25-30 second extraction time for a double shot is the target. Adjust finer if the shot runs too fast, coarser if it chokes.

How fresh should espresso beans be?

Ideally 7-28 days from the roast date. Beans under 5 days old release excess CO2 which disrupts extraction. After 4-6 weeks, flavour and crema quality decline noticeably.

Can I use espresso beans in a cafetiere?

Yes , espresso beans are just beans with a particular roast profile. Grind them coarsely for cafetiere use. The result will be a bold, full-bodied cup. Our cafetiere guide explains the method in detail.
